It is a handmade art museum located in Yaese Town in the southern part of Okinawa’s main island, about 49 minutes by car from Naha Airport. The museum was created by an artist named Hisao Chika over 11 years ago using construction debris and is home to 500 unique works of various sizes. A café serving egg sandwiches made with eggs from a local chicken farm is also a must-see!
Point 1: Almost no tourists? What is the location of “Hisao Museum & Cafe”?
Hisao Museum of Art & Cafe” is located in Yaese-cho, in the southern part of Okinawa’s main island.
One would think that it would take a long time to get there since it is located in the southern part of the main island of Okinawa, but it only takes about 49 minutes from the airport.
By bus, take Ryukyu Bus No. 152 bound for International Passenger Terminal (for Naha Bus Terminal) and get off at Kuniba, then take Ryukyu Bus No. 50 bound for Nakaima (for Tofuhira and Inamine) from Kuniba (for Tofuhira and Inamine) located 4 minutes on foot and get off at Gushigami Drive-in (for Momona and Tamasendo). It takes about one hour. It takes about one hour.
Yaese Town is located between Toyomigusuku City where Senagashima Umikazi Terrace is located, Itoman City where Himeyuri Tower and Peace Memorial Park are located, and Nanjo City where Saiba Utaki is located.
There is only “Adochi Island,” which looks like a hideout of a mysterious religious group, and “Bomagusuku-no-sato Beach,” where there are ruins of a restaurant that once existed.
It is precisely because there are no tourist attractions that most people go to that I feel the urge to visit.
What exactly is the Hisao Chimei Art Museum & Cafe like?
Point 2: Unspeakable emotion and energy! Introduction of the works of “Hisao Museum & Cafe”!
Hisao Chika Art Museum & Cafe” is a private art museum completed by the artist Hisao Chika over 11 years.
The exterior of the museum is unique, with a one-story wooden building to which pieces of wood and ceramic-like objects are attached as decorations.
It was a surprise to learn that Hisao, an artist, handcrafted not only the building but also the furniture from scratch!
Inside, there are about 500 works of art, both large and small, made of iron, driftwood, and stone, as well as paintings.
The paintings depict deep forests and the bottom of the ocean as if connected to the universe, deep paintings reminiscent of Balinese paintings, iron objects welded together that tickle the male heart, and the styles of each decade change so drastically that you feel as if you are looking at the works of many different artists.
The underlying theme of these works of art is the nature of Okinawa.
Many visitors commented that they were moved and energized beyond words, such as, “It has a unique worldview, but it makes me want to visit on a whim,” “I felt the spirit of HIPHOP in the recent works,” and “Everything in the building is art.
Point 3: Introduce the cafe menu, the best of “Hisao Museum & Cafe”!
Hisao Museum of Art & Café” has a café, ‘Otherworldly Tales,’ where the warmth of the wood can be felt as if the space itself is art.
The coffee, hand-dripped one by one with fair trade organic beans, is wonderful, but the specialty of this store is the “egg sandwich.
The sandwich consists of a beautiful golden egg omelet made from eggs from the Niiya Chicken Farm in Yaese Town, sandwiched between slightly sweet pumpkin bread from “Daiki Okinawa,” a welfare facility in Yaese Town!
Once you try it, you will become addicted.
The price of 950 yen with soup and drink is too good to be true.
Please note that this menu is closed on Sundays.
Other items on the menu include honey toast, bacon toast, chocolate caramel toast, and cakes!
After seeing the energy-filled works of art, soothe your mind and body with something sweet.
Please visit Hisao Museum of Art & Cafe, a unique and one-of-a-kind building that is a work of art in itself.
