Unlike American Village, which is more touristy and glamorous, Sandbox is famous for its many Americans living in Okinawa and surfers who come here to surf, as it is close to the Kadena Air Base.
From the center of American Village, which includes Depot Island, to the area a little north of the Hilton and MB Gallery, and further north to the Miyagi area, there are times when almost no foreigners, other than Japanese, pass through the area, giving it an exotic atmosphere.
