This cottage is attached to a book café in the northern part of Okinawa’s main island, about a two-hour drive from Naha Airport. Located just a minute’s walk from the cafe, the cottage is also “completely off the grid” and provides its living infrastructure. How in the world do they provide for their own needs?

Point 1: No buses? How do I get to the “Holiday Timetable”?

Holiday Dia” is a cottage in the jungle in Okuma, northern Okinawa’s main island, attached to a cafe called Book Cafe Okinawarail.

Access is about 2 hours by car from Naha Airport.

First, head north on Route 58 and head for “Michi no Eki Yui Yui Kunigami” (Roadside Station Yui Yui Kunigami). There is a Family Mart near the station, so continue on the road next to the Family Mart.

On the map, it looks like you go north to “Yui Yui Kunigami” and then drive sideways.

If you take a bus, first go to “Nago Bus Terminal” by “Yanbaru Express Bus” or other buses, and then transfer to No. 67 Ryukyu Bus (a 3-minute walk) and get off at “Okuma Beach Iriguchi”.

A one-minute walk will take you to “Michi no Eki Yui Yui Kunigami” (Road Station Yui Yui Kunigami), but there are no buses from there, so you will have to take a cab or something similar.

According to the owner, Mr. Kaneshiro, there are cabs available at night, but not during the daytime, so you may want to take a cab from the front near the airport, where you can catch a cab.

It is not a simple matter of access.

If you are driving, the road is paved for a while from “Michi no Eki Yui Yui Kunigashira,” but gradually becomes a dirt road, and you will arrive just when you start to worry, so do not give up and drive on!

Note that the cottage “Holiday Dia” is less than a minute’s walk from the cafe “Okinawa Rail”. Stop by Okinawa Rail first and ask for more information.

Point 2: Concerned! Introduction to the “Holiday Dia” floor plan!

Holiday Dia” is a small two-story cottage.

It has a stylish two-tone gray and white exterior. The owner seems to have a deep knowledge of architecture, as you can see from Tadao Ando’s book on the “Okinawa Rail.

Upon entering the house, you will find the living room, kitchen, bathroom, and toilet.

There are sofas in front of the kitchen and the living room, and the large windows offer a view of the great nature of Yanbaru.

The bathroom has a stylish and simple bathtub! Here, too, there is a small window, allowing you to bathe while enjoying the view of the great nature.

And the bedroom is located in the loft just up the stairs. There is only one king-size bed, so the maximum capacity is two people.

Since the stay is only a “hands-on” experience, there are no unnecessary amenities.

Room rates vary depending on the day of the week: 55,000 yen for Monday nights, 100,000 yen from Tuesday to Thursday
150,000 yen on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Reservations can only be made through Airbnb.

This may seem expensive compared to a regular hotel, but it is a rare opportunity to experience a completely off-grid experience, so this may still be inexpensive.

Point 3: How is the “holiday diamond” living infrastructure funded?

There is no electricity, gas, or water in the mountains of Yanbaru, where “Holiday Dia” is located.

So how is the infrastructure provided?

First of all, we generate our electricity using solar panels on the roof and a generator from a “Nissan LEAF”.

We also use an electric cooker in the kitchen, but the heat is not strong enough to “just heat things. It seems a little too much to cook.

Gas is used with a vacuum solar water heater, and “when the weather is nice” they use this to boil water for bathing.

When the weather is bad, a gas water heater is used.

Internet is also available through a satellite antenna called “STARLINK”, which sends radio waves from space. However, the speed fluctuates depending on the weather, but it is said to be fast enough for viewing the Internet. It may be a bit difficult to get to the movies.

More information than this will be available after you experience the service at a hands-on meeting and receive an explanation.

There are many accommodations in Okinawa where you can experience nature, such as “tree houses” and “glamping,” but it may not be possible to experience something “completely off the grid” like this! If you would like a more specialized experience and ask questions, please visit.
