Azuma Shoten” on Tsuken Island off the coast of Uruma City
Tsuken Island off the coast of Uruma City on the east coast of Okinawa’s main island has a circumference of about 7 km. Azuma Shoten” is an island store with a retro Showa-era atmosphere, a combination of a supermarket and a restaurant, and is one of the few places on the island where you can find such a store.
As a tourist, Azuma Shoten is a rare experience, so it is definitely worth a visit.
Even the signboard is handwritten with a nice taste.
Point 1: Azuma Shoten is a store selling goods (Yorozuya)
This “Azuma Shoten” is first of all a kind of Yorozu-ya shop for locals. As you can see in the photo, there are many items ranging from cup noodles to Bon Curry, canned foods, and so on.
Although it does not seem to sell any particular souvenirs, “San-Pin Tea” can be seen here, so you may be able to find some bargains that the locals love to use.
Point 2: Azuma Shoten as a bike rental shop
Tsuken Island is about 7 km in circumference, and renting a bicycle is recommended, but you can rent one for 500 yen per day at Azuma Shoten.
Azuma Shoten is located just a 4-minute walk from the harbor and is easily recognizable.
Word on the street is that when you return the rental bike, you are given a Sata Andagi (Okinawan sweet with carrots), which is a specialty of the store!
Point 3: “Tsuken Carrot Cider” is recommended!
Tsuken Island is a 30-minute ferry ride from the main island of Okinawa. The island’s mineral-rich soil, exposed to sea breezes, has long been a popular place for carrot cultivation.
It is now called “Carrot Island” and is a must-see for carrot fans.
They are soft and sweet to the core, especially near the leaves. The leaves in particular are so sweet that one might even ask, “Is that a persimmon?
The local people are not afraid to take notice of such a famous product, and have created a cider to make young people more familiar with it.
