It takes about one hour by car from Naha Airport. It is a beautiful long beach located at the end of a park in Nago, in the northern part of Okinawa’s main island. It is empty throughout the year, probably because not many people come to Nago even for swimming. If you are looking for a beach that feels like a private beach, this is the place to go!
Point 1: “Weed Beach” is easily accessible, even though it is in the northern part of the country!
Weed Beach” is located in Koki, Nago City. Even though it is in Nago City, it is located on the border with Onna Village, so it does not feel like a secluded Yanbaru area yet.
From the airport area, it takes only about an hour to get there if you take Route 331 and 58.
Also, even if you get out of your car, there is free parking and restrooms in the park next to it, and it is very convenient. Both the seawall and the beach are well-maintained.
The beach is unexpectedly wide and long, giving you a very open feeling.
The deep blue sea, typical of Nago, is different in color from that of the central and southern parts of Japan.
Point 2: What kind of beach is “Weed Beach”?
The “weed” in “Weed Beach” refers to seaweed, but there is not that much seaweed on the beach.
But perhaps there used to be.
Weed Beach is located at the end of a park and looks like a public beach, but it does not have any activities or rentals.
It is more like a place where locals gather and enjoy themselves rather than tourists.
I envy Okinawan people who have beautiful beaches just a short walk away from their homes.
Point 3: What are the sights and food around “Weed Beach”?
Even though “Weed Beach” is located in Nago, it is also close to Onna Village.
Although the attractions are somewhat long-established, we recommend the Underwater Observation Tower (6 minutes by car) and Nago Pineapple Park (19 minutes by car).
The pineapple park in particular is one of the places you should visit when you come to Nago.
As for gourmet food, “Columban,” which serves American-style food with a retro appearance, is a must-see! We also recommend “Maruoki Shoten,” a one-minute drive away that serves everything from soba noodles to steaks and BBQ.
If you want to enjoy the beach after the beach, Nago, closer to Onna Village, is the place to go!
