What is Hothugger?

Suddenly, have you ever heard of ho-Tugger? Many Okinawan words are difficult to understand, but ho-Tugger means a tugger (well) found by a ho (pigeon).

Legend has it that once upon a time, during a period of continuous drought, an islander wondered why a pigeon was always wetting its wings, so he followed the pigeon and dug down to find a spring.

This place called Hohtugaru is located along the west coast near the ferry terminal of Tsuken Port, which is off the coast of Uruma City on the east coast of the main island of Okinawa.

Point 1: In fact, it is worshipped as a god of procreation.

The Hortugar well has been the source of water for Tsuken Island for a long time but is no longer in use.

The top of the well is made of Ryukyu limestone and the bottom of the well is made of sand, and it is believed that the sand stratum was originally moistened by the spring water.

Since the water was gushing out from the well, it was enshrined as a god of prosperity of descendants, and a sacred body is enshrined by the side of the well.

Point 2: A spectacular view of the gradient ocean below!

Hohtugar is located on a high plateau, with the shining blue gradient of the sea spreading out below. There are stalactites in the shape of a man and woman embracing each other.

If you go there as a couple, the tropical scenery and the stalactites of a man and a woman will probably strengthen your bond even more.

Point 3: The beach viewed from the nearby Carrot Lookout is also spectacular!

Tsuken Island is famous for its very tasty carrots. That is why there are carrot objects everywhere. The view of “Tumai Beach” from the unique carrot-shaped observatory near Hortugar is spectacular.

The white sandy beach on the sea that changes from emerald green to blue gradation soothes the hearts of weary travelers.

Okinawa has many flashy spots with an American image, but there are also many spiritual spots like this, each of which has its own story and often offers a spectacular view, making it a hidden must-see spot.
