Yachimun, Okinawan pottery, is characterized by its comforting touch and Okinawan colors. COCOCO is located in Tamaki, Nanjo City, a town rich in nature in the southern part of Okinawa Prefecture, where you can purchase and experience Yachimun.
The owner, potter Masashi Yokoi, discovered pottery in Okinawa after working for a company and created his works with the thought of people who would be pleased with their purchases. As if to convey his thoughts, all of his works have a warmth that makes you feel relaxed.
It is also a place where visitors can make their ceramics.
The atelier where visitors can observe the process of Yachimun production is attached.
COCOCO is a store and atelier located on the same site, where you can not only see the works but also catch a glimpse of how Masashi Yokoi works. It is fascinating to see how the ordinary soil is brought to life, as if by magic.
Currently, due to the Corona measures and relocation work, the museum is open by appointment only. It is a good idea to inquire in advance to see if they will give you a tour.
Heartwarming cuteness and outstanding traditional beauty
The Yachimun created by Yokoi are characterized by their relaxing colors and cuteness. There is a house that looks like it could be in some faraway seaside town or a cup or plate that looks like a house with a small door painted on it… These are all works that are fun to choose from.
The original Bingata ceramics have a quiet, yet inspiring beauty. They are used to make nameplates and other items. It is very fashionable.
Currently, the works can be purchased on the premises, at consignment stores throughout the prefecture, and through an online store.
Let’s make your only vessel in the world by experiencing ceramics!
One of the highlights of COCOCO is the opportunity to try your hand at pottery making. Unlike the pottery-making experience at large tourist facilities, you will be taught one-on-one by a potter, so you will be able to learn what Yachimun is while making your pottery. Not only tourists but also locals use this service.
You will surely become attached to your one-of-a-kind vessel! How about savoring the experience of seeing and touching Yachimun?
(Currently, the museum seems to be on hiatus due to Corona measures. We look forward to its reopening.)
