Only 7 minutes by car from Naha Airport. Located in Matsuyama, Naha City, this restaurant is famous for its large portions. It is located a little off Kokusai-dori (International Street), but you can easily find it by walking around the area and looking at the flashy yellow sign. The restaurant also offers Okinawan specialties such as chanpon and sukiyaki!

Point 1: What is the menu at “Restaurant Mikasa Matsuyama” like?

The picture below the sign is “Sukiyaki”.

Restaurant Mikasa Matsuyama is located in Matsuyama, a 5-minute walk from Kokusai-dori in Naha City, and is a diner famous for its large portions. There is another affiliated restaurant in Kume, a 3-minute walk away, and a rival restaurant, Mikado Shokudo, a 2-minute walk away, making this area a fierce battle area for Naha’s famous large-serving restaurants.

The clientele includes Uchinamis, tourists, and local foreigners. There is a line of people waiting in line even before the restaurant opens, but it does not seem to get very crowded, probably due to the good customer service.

Both the kitchen and the hall are staffed by local mothers and grandmothers.

The restaurant’s menu includes the usual fare such as steak bowls, pork cutlet bowls, pork cutlet curry, yakiniku and gingerbread set menus, as well as Okinawan favorites such as tofu, fu, vegetable, and bitter gourd stir-fries, Okinawan soba noodles, and pork and egg.

Interestingly, in addition to the standard Okinawan dishes, the restaurant also offers a unique Okinawan menu that differs from that of mainland Japan, such as champon (the most popular dish at the restaurant!) and yasukiyaki. If you are interested in B-class gourmet food, you should try it.

It is also nice to note that even though this is a diner, all seats are non-smoking from opening to closing!

Point 2: What are chanpon and sukiyaki at “Restaurant Mikasa Matsuyama”?

The photo is a Chanpon.

Restaurant Mikasa Matsuyama has both chanpon and sukiyaki on the menu.

However, Okinawan Chanpon and sukiyaki are different from those on the mainland, and not just in this restaurant.

There does not seem to be a strict definition of Okinawan Chanpon, and the restaurant’s arrangement of Chanpon Mikasa-style (with soup, 650 yen) is a sweetened stew of chopped onions and minced meat, topped with an egg and served over rice, with a gentle flavor.

Sukiyaki (with soup, 800 yen) is also not a mainland dish, but a combination of beef, onions, Chinese cabbage, and a raw egg on a plate. It is soupier than the one prepared in a sukiyaki pot, but many people prefer it! Many people prefer this dish! It is a dish with such a concentrated flavor.

Chanpon in particular is said to be Okinawa’s hidden soul food, so if you are interested in Okinawan B-Grade gourmet food, I highly recommend you to try it!

Point 3: “Restaurant Mikasa Matsuyama” also offers sandwiches!

In addition to set menus and Okinawan cuisine, the Matsuyama branch of Restaurant Mikasa also offers a variety of sandwiches.

The sandwiches include the unusual “ham and egg sandwich”, “cheese and egg sandwich”, and “bacon and egg sandwich”. All are attractively priced at 400 yen!

The sandwiches are made not with bread, but with thick, coppé bread-like bread, with hearty ingredients, and are full of flavor.

You can also take them out, so you can use them as a lunch box on your way to your next destination!
