Play in the huge strange rocks formed by the erosion of Ryukyu limestone and into (lagoon)!
Gushichan Beach (Gushigashira Beach) is a beach located in Yaese-cho, Okinawa Prefecture. It is located about 40 minutes by car from Naha Airport, making it relatively easy to reach.
The beach is famous as a Mecca for bouldering due to its many strangely shaped Ryukyu limestone rocks that have been gouged by the forces of nature. Many aquatic creatures can be seen in the in (reef ponds) that appear at low tide, and snorkeling and children’s water sports can be enjoyed.
Originally, it was not a very famous place, but it quickly became famous when the famous idol group Perfume used it for the filming of their PV “Relax In The City”.
Point 1: There are many powerful and strange megaliths!
Gushichan Beach was originally famous as a spot where many strangely shaped megaliths, formed by waves and winds that have gouged Ryukyu limestone over the years, can be seen.
The giant rocks, which are much larger than a person, are everywhere and are very powerful when seen up close. Many of the rocks have been eroded by the wind and waves to form mushroom-shaped rocks that are narrower at the foot and larger toward the top, creating a tunnel between the rocks. It is recommended to relax on a plastic sheet in the shade.
Many visitors also come here for bouldering because of the large number of these huge rocks.
Point 2: Ino (reef pond) is full of aquatic life! Ideal as a children’s playground
As the tide recedes, seawater accumulates in rocky hollows, creating indoors (reef ponds) everywhere. The saltwater and aquatic life that was there at high tide is left behind, so a wide variety of aquatic life can be seen.
Some are shallow, some are deep, and families can be seen playing with their children in the shallow reef pools, while snorkelers can be seen in the deeper reef pools. Some people use harpoons to catch fish.
This is a popular spot as a playground where you can casually observe aquatic life with your children.
Point 3: Location of Perfume’s “Relax In The City” PV filming
Gushichan Beach became well known when it was used as a location for the PV “Relax In The City” by the popular idol group Perfume.
Although the PV was shot in 2016, there are still many people who visit Gushi-chan Beach in Okinawa after learning about it through Perfume’s PV. It was also introduced on the official website of Yaese Town.
After this PV was aired, the number of tourists increased at once.
The image of the Okinawan sea is “white sandy beach” and “crystal clear sea,” but playing on this kind of Okinawan-like but not Okinawan-like beach is also recommended.
