There is a beach with a cool name “17END” at the end of the runway of Shimojijima Airport next to Irabu Island. What is the origin of that name? Are there any activities? Can you swim there? What is the true nature of the beach that is a mystery?
Point 1: What is the origin of the name “17END” (one seven end)?
17END” (One Seventeen End) is a beach on the edge of a former pilot training airport on Shimoji Island, next to Irabu Island. Currently, in addition to serving as a test airfield for JAL and ANA mid-size aircraft, the airport is also served by Jetstar and other airline companies.
The fact that it is located at the end of the runway, as well as the unusual name “17END,” which does not look like a beach, is what draws the eye.
Why is it called “17END”? It is said that it is because the runway has the letter “17” written on it. This means that if an aircraft approaches in this direction, it will be able to land in the direction of approximately 170° (to the south).
In addition, the end of the runway is called “Runway End” in aviation terminology, and the two together are said to have given rise to the name “17END.
In fact, if you look at aerial photos, you can see the number “17” on the runway.
It is not just because it looks cool, but because it has a clear origin.
As for the access to 17 END, it takes about 10 minutes by car from Shimojishima Airport, but cars are not allowed on the way, so it is a 41-minute walk from there.
The distance is about 4 km. This is not recommended for people with children.
Point 2: Can you swim in “17END” (One Seventeen End)?
So is it really possible to swim at “17END”?
Normally, there are only tetrapods at “17END,” but only at low tide does a sandy beach appear. Therefore, not only locals but also tourists swim at low tide.
Because it is an isolated island, the crystal clear, shallow water is like a swimming pool, and the ocean is like heaven.
When the weather is clear, the contrast between the bright blue sky and emerald green is so beautiful that many people upload their pictures on Instagram.
However, since this is not an official beach, there are no snorkeling or other activities or rentals available. Even though the water is shallow, please be careful of the tides and dangerous creatures, and have fun.
Point 3: What are some places to see and eat near “17END” (One Seventh End)?
17END” is located on Shimoji Island, which is connected to Irabu Island by a bridge. One-third of the island is covered by an airstrip, so for gourmet food you will have to go to the neighboring Irabu Island.
The best gourmet restaurant on Irabu Island is TIN’IN, located in the southern part of the island.
The restaurant is located in the Marriott Group’s IRAF SUI Luxury Collection Hotel, and has windows on three sides, so you can enjoy a full view of the emerald green sea!
The lunch course, which makes the most of Okinawan ingredients and is stylishly arranged, is a bit pricey, starting at 5,313 yen, but it is a rare opportunity to eat in such a spectacular setting, so we highly recommend that you experience it for yourself!
