About 13 minutes by car from Naha Airport. This Okinawa Zenzai shop is located near Tomari Port, where boats leave for the outlying islands. You will be surprised at the unique serving, with ice and azuki served separately! Moreover, the ice is served in a double-layered container so that it does not melt. The thoughtfulness is delightful.
Point 1: What is the location of “Fuji Iemari Honten”?
Fujiya Tomari Honten is located in the northeast of Naha City, near Tomari Port, where boats heading to the islands arrive and depart, and also near Tomarin.
It takes about 13 minutes by car from Naha Airport, about the same time it takes to get to Kokusai Dori, so it is possible to go directly to Fujiya when you arrive in Naha.
Established in 1992, Fujiya has been in business for 30 years without a break, and has grown into an Okinawa zenzai shop that is well known to all Okinawans.
Fujiya’s zenzai is now sold at Family Mart and other convenience stores.
Fujiya has recently undergone a renovation, and its colorful illustrations on the outside stand out.
The interior is also decorated with surfboards and antique-style chairs, making it hard to believe that it is a 30-year-old establishment. It has the atmosphere of a beach house at a resort, so to speak.
The interior is also unique, with Eames chairs and a foot-pedal sewing machine used as a table! It is also fun and very uplifting.
Point 2: What is the unique Okinawa Zenzai of “Fuji Family Tomari Honten”?
The main dish at Fujiya Tomari Honten is, of course, “Okinawa Zenzai” (Okinawa Zenzai).
As you may know, Okinawa zenzai is different from that of mainland Japan in that it consists of boiled beans topped with shaved ice and mixed together.
But here at Fujiya, the shaved ice, kintoki-mame and shiratama are served separately. This is done to prevent the shaved ice from melting, and is served in a double-layered container, similar to those often used for beer tumblers, to keep the shaved ice ice ice ice cold.
In addition, the shaved ice used for Okinawa zenzai is made by freezing boiled beans in their own broth, which gives it a slightly pale azuki color. Is this the same principle as when ice is made from iced coffee, so it does not dilute in the glass?
Kame senbei (turtle crackers), which are eaten when the tongue is paralyzed by cold, are also unique! Kame senbei are sold at Don Quijote and other stores as a simple Okinawan souvenir. It is a carbohydrate-filled snack made with wheat flour instead of rice.
In addition to “Fujiya Zenzai,” Okinawa Zenzai is available in brown sugar, green tea, milk, etc. Shaved ice comes in a variety of flavors, including mango, banana, cafe latte, jasmine tea, strawberry, and milk tea.
Prices are also reasonable, ranging from 420 to 470 yen for Okinawa zenzai and 840 to 890 yen for shaved ice.
In addition to Okinawa zenzai and shaved ice, the restaurant also offers taco rice, tacos, loco moco, Okinawa soba, and beverages.
So even greedy people who are hungry but also want to eat dessert can be satisfied!
Point 3: There is also a Katsuura branch of “Fuji Iemari Honten” in Chiba Prefecture!
Fuji Iemari Honten” is opening in Katsuura, Chiba Prefecture on July 30, 2023, and we thought it was off limits except in Okinawa! This is good news for those of you in the Kanto area!
Located in Katsuura Uminchu Park, the menu offers the same Okinawa zenzai and shaved ice as the Tomari main store, as well as taco rice and curry!
Also unique is the fact that the zenzai is served with “turtle crackers” in Okinawa, but in Katsuura, the zenzai is served with “sea bream crackers,” a local specialty here!
