Hagamigu Shrine is one of the eight Ryukyu shrines located in Wakasa, Naha City.
Eight shrines in Okinawa have received special treatment from the Ryukyu Kingdom. These include Okinomiya Shrine, Shikina Shrine, Futenmangu Shrine, Suyoshigu Shrine, Asato Hachimangu Shrine, Amekugu Shrine, Kinmugu Shrine, and Hagamiya Shrine. Hagamigu is the most prestigious of the eight and was revered as the first shrine of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
It is a 15-minute drive from Naha Airport or a 15-minute walk from Yui Rail Asahibashi Station and is affectionately called “Namminsan” by Okinawans.
Benefits of Hagamigu Shrine
The most famous benefits of Hagami-gu Shrine are prayers for the fulfillment of love, a good marriage, and easy childbirth. One of the reasons for this is that Izanami no Mikoto, a female deity, is enshrined as one of the deities of the shrine.
The shrine is also a sacred place where one can pray for safety in the home, protection from bad luck, prosperity in business, success in entrance exams, safety at sea, and good fortune and longevity, among many other blessings. In the precincts of the shrine, you can also see deigo flowers, one of the three most popular flowers in Ryukyu, from spring to early summer. The language of deigo flowers is “love, vitality, and life force. If you can see deigo flowers, your luck will improve even more! Maybe!
