It takes about one hour by car from Naha Airport. This public beach is located in the northern part of Okinawa’s main island, but is accessible in one hour. It is almost perfect in terms of transparency, facilities, and cleanliness! On weekdays, it is almost a private beach. What kind of beach is it?
Point 1: What is the location of “Nago Shimin Beach”?
Nago Shimin Beach is located in Nago, near Onna Village, in the northern part of the main island of Okinawa. Because of Okinawa’s well-developed expressways, even though it is located in the northern part of the main island, it can be accessed within an hour or so.
Although the beach is named “Nago Shimin Beach,” it is open to visitors even if they are not residents of Nago!
However, since there is no extensive signage, there is a great possibility that you will pass by it.
As a point of reference, it is easy to find by heading north on Route 58 extending from Naha, passing the Best Western Kohki Hotel, and entering the national highway on the ocean side when you see the community center.
Point 2: What kind of beach is “Nago Shimin Beach”?
Nago Shimin Beach is a long, clean white sand beach that stretches for 1,500 meters.
It is a public beach that is properly managed and is equipped with a parking lot, toilets, showers, and changing rooms, and it is free of charge.
The beach is emerald green and shallow, as is typical of Nago, and the beautiful ocean is very Okinawa-like.
The sandy beach is moderately curved, and is very clean and free of garbage, as if they clean the beach from time to time.
There are also many green and shady areas to avoid the strong Okinawan sun.
Sometimes you can see some locals snorkeling, but on weekdays it is almost a private beach.
Since it is not an official beach, swimming and snorkeling are at your own risk, but please be careful of the currents and dangerous creatures.
The bottom of the ocean is rough, so we recommend wearing marine shoes if possible.
Point 3: What are some places to see and eat around “Nago Shimin Beach”?
Photo: Pineapples at “Roadside Station Xuda
The area around “Nago Shimin Beach” is located in Nago, in the northern part of Okinawa’s main island, and is home to many gourmet spots.
The first famous one is “Michi no Eki Kusuda” (Roadside Station Kusuda).
It is famous for its freshly made sataa andagi (Okinawan doughnuts), tacos, pineapple mozuku tempura, and other specialties.
It is also not surprising that tickets to “Churaumi Aquarium” are sold at a discount price.
In stores, we recommend “Deigoie” where you can enjoy not only Okinawa soba but also Okinawan cuisine, and “Columban”, a retro coffee shop where you can enjoy everything from Okinawan cuisine to steaks!
There are many restaurants in the area, so you can enjoy the beach after!
