There are many U.S. military bases in Okinawa.
There are not many opportunities to see what goes on inside the bases, as there are guards at the gates and they are not open to the public. (Flea markets and festivals are held regularly.)
Surrounded by wire netting, the base is a mystery even to me, an actual resident of Okinawa.
The “Roadside Station Kadena” in Kadena Town, Okinawa Prefecture, is a place where you can see such a U.S. military base from directly above.
What a surprise, there is an observation deck where you can watch fighter jets take off and land.
It is a spot visited by many locals and tourists.
Point 1: Close-range bases & fighters

One of the highlights of “Roadside Station Kadena” is, as mentioned above, the observatory from which you can see the base.
The observatory is located on the 4th floor of the building and can be reached by elevator or stairs.
Since there is only one narrow elevator, it may be better to use the stairs when it is crowded.
The open observation deck is comfortable with chairs and tables and a roof.
Many people wait for the fighter planes to take off and land, and when the moment arrives, they cheer.
The noise of the engines is quite loud, so please be considerate of small children.
You will not be able to see the fighter planes often, so it is best to wait patiently while observing the interior of the spacious base and taking in the view from the good vantage point.
Point 2: Learning exhibit room with many things for adults to learn as well

On the third floor of the building, there is a space called the “Learning Exhibition Room.
Visitors can learn about the relationship between Kadena Town and the U.S. military base with detailed materials and models.
The photos of Kadena Town before the war and the models of fighter planes actually used at the U.S. military base are a must-see for the enthusiasts.
Since there are few opportunities to learn about Okinawa’s history from the media alone, it is very valuable to be able to actually see and learn about it on site.
It was impressive to see children reading the materials with serious eyes.
*The Learning Exhibition Room on the 3rd floor will be closed during the renovation work starting February 1, 2023.
Point 3: Good food is gathered here.

There are many restaurants on the first floor of Michi no Eki Kana.
There are burgers, chicken, steaks, Okinawan soba noodles, and other items that can only be found here.
In particular, the “Jumbo Cheeseburger” is a local favorite.
There is also a full lineup of sweet foods, so whether you want a hearty meal or a sweet treat to fill your stomach, there is something for everyone.
Each person orders what he or she wants to eat at the eat-in space.
The covered outdoor space allows for a moderate breeze and good ventilation.
Both adults and children can enjoy “Roadside Station Kana”, please visit.
