About 2 hours and 13 minutes by car from Naha Airport. Located in Kunigami-mura, Kunigami-gun, it is probably the northernmost inn in Okinawa. Amid the great nature of Yanbaru, the inn has a homey, handmade atmosphere that cannot be experienced at a resort hotel. The personality of the owner and his wife is also well known.
Point 1: The location of “INDIGO between the sky” is amazing!
Sora no Ma INDIGO” is located in Kunigami-mura, Kunigami-gun. It takes 2 hours and 13 minutes by car from Naha Airport.
Considering that even the Churaumi Aquarium, which is visited by ordinary tourists, takes about one and a half hours from the airport, you can see how far it is.
Incidentally, the northernmost point of Okinawa is Cape Hendo, which is only 13 minutes by car to the southeast.
It takes about 125 km by bicycle, or about 4.5 hours by bus via two bus terminals in Nago and Hedona, and transferring to a bus operated by Kunigami Village.
It takes quite a long time from the airport to the lodge, but you will be very happy when you get there!
Point 2: The handmade feel of “INDIGO between the sky” is amazing!
The charm of “Sora no Ma INDIGO” is that it is run by a husband and wife duo, and the inn is full of a handmade atmosphere. We cannot hide our surprise when we heard that the slender wife handcrafted the inn almost by herself.
The grounds, thick with tropical vegetation, are dotted with cottages and log cabins, as well as communal restrooms, shower rooms, a restaurant, and a gallery.
If you think you’ve seen this place somewhere before, you’ll know it’s a backpacker’s lodge from Bali in the 1980s.
There is also an aviary on the premises, where a cock crowing in the morning is kept free-range. In the morning, you can wake up to the sound of their cries.
The concrete and slate-roofed cottage has a wide bed and a single bed, and one large and one small table. Even the furniture, which looks like it was picked up from driftwood and put together, is full of handmade touches.
It is 18.7 square meters in size. The rooms are decorated with objects made of driftwood and palm fibers, creating a natural but unique atmosphere. It even has a spiritual feel.
The log cabin has a wide bed and two small tables. For some reason, these cabins do not have a handmade feel, but rather are made directly from natural taste products, and are 8.7 square meters in size.
It is not so different from a natural taste hotel room.
Depending on the number of people staying, it is up to the person to choose between a cottage or a log cabin, but I would probably choose a log cabin.
However, as some people describe this inn as “a place where you always find yourself coming here,” I think it is difficult to say which is better, because “comfort” is different for each person.
The price for a cottage is 8,500 yen per night per adult with half board, and 7,500 yen for a log cabin.
Guests seem to be quite unique, such as a family who loves nature, or a person who is running a marathon or cycling around the main island of Okinawa (laugh).
Point 3: The semi-open-air restaurant at “INDIGO in the Sky Room” is amazing!
At “INDIGO in the Sky Room,” dinner is served at 6:00 p.m. in the semi-open-air hut dining room on the property.
Guests sit in natural wood uncomfortable chairs in front of the counter and have an open kitchen? and can look out over the open kitchen.
Alcohol is charged but 400~500 yen. Dishes are original and creative dishes made from local products.
Starting with vegetables, the restaurant serves a succession of Okinawan dishes, such as dengaku (island tofu denga) coated with homemade miso, grilled shrimp and fish, and sprouts of some kind, as if they were a course.
It is fun to chat with the owner and his wife who prepare the dishes.
When you finish eating and go back to your room, it is pitch dark, so a flashlight is a must!
If you want to experience such a wild lodging, you have no choice but to come to Yanbaru!
