The pride of Okinawa’s mysterious sea! Blue Cave

In Onna Village, in the central area of Okinawa, there is a spectacular spot called Cape Maeda. The cave at the bottom of the cliff at Cape Maeda is called “Blue Cave” and is a popular spot for snorkeling and diving. Sunlight reflects off the ocean floor and illuminates the entire cave, creating a fantastic “blue world” inside the cave. The sun and the clear ocean create a spectacular view unique to Okinawa. The blue color of the cave is indescribably beautiful and attracts many visitors. This is a must-see spot when you visit Okinawa.

Point 1: There are two ways to access the site for snorkeling!

Snorkeling, which requires little special practice to get to the Blue Cave, is recommended. Marine sports stores in the area offer multiple tours daily, and you can choose the one that best suits your needs. For snorkeling, there are two options: boat entry, where you take a boat to the cave entrance, and beach entry, where you go down the steps of Cape Maeda and then swim to the cave. The boat entry is a little more expensive, but can be enjoyed by those who are not confident in their physical strength or those over 60 years old.

Point 2: Once in the cave, a super fantasy world unfolds before your eyes.

For boat entry, snorkeling masks are donned near the entrance to the cave, and the snorkelers enter the water. From there, depending on the tour, you will swim about 20 to 30 meters. The waves are relatively calm and the instructor will always be there to assist you, so even beginners will feel comfortable. Once inside the cave, you will begin to see the deep blue glow of the light reflecting off the ocean floor. The center of the cave is said to be the most beautiful blue spot, and some tours offer a commemorative photo for each participant. The cave offers a spectacular view of various shades of blue.

Point 3: Lots of tropical fish! You can even experience feeding them!

Tropical fish also live around the Blue Cave. Many of the colorful fish are typical of Okinawa, and you may even encounter fish with patterns you have seen before. Many tours to the Blue Cave include feeding the tropical fish. When you feed the fish in the water, they immediately come to you and you can observe them from a very close distance. The fish are so accustomed to people that they will even touch you. Depending on the tour, you may be able to take pictures while feeding the fish, which will be a great memory for you.
