Currently, in addition to serving as a test airfield for JAL and ANA mid-size aircraft, the airport is also served by Jetstar and other airline companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fact that it is located at the end of the runway, as well as the unusual name &#8220;17END,&#8221; which does not look like a beach, is what draws the eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why is it called &#8220;17END&#8221;? It is said that it is because the runway has the letter &#8220;17&#8221; written on it. This means that if an aircraft approaches in this direction, it will be able to land in the direction of approximately 170\u00b0 (to the south).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the end of the runway is called &#8220;Runway End&#8221; in aviation terminology, and the two together are said to have given rise to the name &#8220;17END.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, if you look at aerial photos, you can see the number &#8220;17&#8221; on the runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not just because it looks cool, but because it has a clear origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the access to 17 END, it takes about 10 minutes by car from Shimojishima Airport, but cars are not allowed on the way, so it is a 41-minute walk from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The distance is about 4 km.
